May 6, 2023 -- Competitive spirits and a love of reading filled the room as teams from Edgewood ISD tested their knowledge in the 2023 Kibodeaux Battle of the Bluebonnets reading competition. In the end, The Loma Park Battlebonnets outlasted 15 other teams to claim the district championship.
Students in third through fifth grade read nearly two dozen Texas Bluebonnet Award-nominated books to compete in the Battle of the Bluebonnets. Surrounded by more than 200 students, staff and family members, librarians quizzed the students to see which team knew the most about each story.
“[Edgewood ISD] has held this event for almost 20 years,” says EISD librarian Joseph Duffy. “It is a wonderful opportunity for our elementary students to interact with other schools and ameliorate their love of reading.”
The Battlebonnets took first place by one point. The Unstoppable Bobcats from LBJ Elementary School came in second, followed by the Stafford Bookworms from Stafford Visual & Performing Arts Elementary. All three teams will face students from San Antonio ISD, Harlandale ISD, Southwest ISD and Judson ISD in the city championship May 20th.
