Whether attending school virtually or on-campus, EISD families have faced unprecedented challenges that are affecting their student's learning and attendance. Aware of our community's needs, the Edgewood ISD Family and Community Engagement Department is going the extra mile by making hundreds of home visits in only a matter of days.

Beginning on a Monday, liaisons teamed up to make their rounds going door to door, talking with families to better understand their stories and struggles and lending assistance as needed. By Friday, the liaisons had completed over 400 home visits.

"It’s more than just missing school, it's determining the cause of the absence. Often our students are dealing with external factors that are affecting their attendance. One of the most important things that we can do is remove those barriers," said George Garnica, Family Engagement Coordinator.

The goal of the Family and Community Engagement Department is to build strong, lasting relationships with the community and be a place of assurance. They offer clothing, food, and shelter resources and their vast connections to community agencies allow them to refer families for other assistance like paying for utilities.

"We know how difficult this past year has been for all of us, "said George. "No one could have imagined how this pandemic would change our lives, but we want our community to know that we are here to help."
