On October 19, students and staff of F.D. Roosevelt Elementary rallied together to support second-grade teacher, Mrs. Fuentes, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Roosevelt staff and students wore pink and lined the campus hallways to surprise Mrs. Fuentes.

Friends and staff wore personalized pink t-shirts that read, "In this family, no one fights alone." The back of the t-shirts read #FuentesWarriors. “We wanted to let her know that we are here to support her and fight this battle with her. We wanted to show her that she isn’t alone in this,” said Mr. Garza, a fifth-grade teacher at Roosevelt. The encouragement and love felt in the hallways was overwhelming.

Mrs. Fuentes has worked at Roosevelt Elementary for the last four years and with Edgewood ISD for 11 years. When asked about her reaction to the surprise she said, “It has got to be one of the best things to come out of this news. We really are a family here and I know they have my back.” School staff will continue to rally behind this beloved teacher to make sure she knows she will be supported throughout her journey. Faculty and staff are also organizing events outside of the school day to help Mrs. Fuentes with medical bills.
