With the ongoing pandemic and stress issues on the rise, Gus Garcia University School coaches are teaching students how to cope with challenges by introducing mindfulness, which is the practice of focusing your attention on the present moment instead of on past or future worries. Mindfulness exercises include rainbow breathing, meditation, and chair-sun salutations that combine breathing and movement in an energizing stretch. These can help students rejuvenate their minds and bodies for the remainder of their school day.

“We all know physical activity is an important concept to a child’s overall development, but mindfulness exercises can help their emotional needs that some physical activities might not reach,” said Adrian Quiroz, Gus Garcia University School coach.

Towards the end of his classes, Coach Quiroz asks students to take a seat on the gym floor, lay their heads back and close their eyes. “Close your eyes and relax. It’s okay if you fall asleep, just take your mind to a positive place and find peace for the moment," he instructs. The sounds of the ocean are playing in the background.Coach Quiroz

“If they can’t focus then they can’t learn,” said Coach. “Even after an energizing day in P.E., the meditation time we give our kids helps them relax and relieve any areas of their body that might be stressed.”

This is a great example of the amazing EISD educators who serve by the district's mission to provide an exceptional learning experience that engages, empowers, and prepares students to compete and reach their highest potential in an ever-changing World.
