Six culinary students from Memorial High School recently showcased their talent at the St. Philip’s College Appetizer and Dessert Competition, earning recognition for both creativity and skill. Competing against students from across the region, the MHS team displayed impressive teamwork and a strong commitment to their craft.
“I get to see my students put in the work, both in and out of the classroom, and seeing them succeed is incredibly rewarding,” said Chef Megan Tapia, MHS Culinary Instructor. “They stay late after school to practice because they truly want to do their best.”
The Dessert Team—Christian Martinez, Angely Serrato, and Daniel Steel—earned third place in both the People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice categories, a remarkable accomplishment that speaks to their ability to impress a wide audience as well as culinary professionals.
Their standout dish, a Mexican-inspired butter cake with blue masa cajeta and light whipped crema, combined traditional flavors with a modern presentation. The dessert reflected both creativity and a deep appreciation for cultural influences.

The Appetizer Team—Raelyn Guevara, Rihanna Peterson, and Annahi Alvarado—also represented Memorial High School with pride, presenting a thoughtfully crafted dish of their own. Beyond the competition, the students gained valuable experience by connecting with industry professionals and exploring future career opportunities.
“These events are especially meaningful because students meet people who can help shape their future,” Chef Tapia added. “At this competition, they connected with professionals offering scholarships and career opportunities.”

This achievement marks an exciting moment for Memorial High School’s culinary program, highlighting the students’ dedication, talent, and passion for the culinary arts.
