2018-2019 Teacher of the Year
Degrees and Certifications:
Meet Gema Vasquez, the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year for John F. Kennedy High School. Gema was born in Mexico and grew up in Brownsville, Texas. She began her undergraduate career at UT Brownsville then transferred to UT San Antonio where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She is a Spanish teacher at JFK High School and has been teaching in Edgewood ISD for 19 years. One thing she enjoys about teaching in EISD is her students. “I enjoy the kids. If there is anything wrong in my day, it dissolves the minute I start interacting with the kids.” When we asked Gema how she felt about her nomination as Teacher of the Year, she was humbled. “Of course, I appreciate the nomination and the fact that my colleagues feel this way, I appreciate that,” she said. “This is my calling in life and if I’m doing everything right then I’m glad, I’m glad I’m doing a good job,” Gema says that teaching is her purpose in life. She enjoys building relationships with her students and making a change in the community, one that is very similar to her upbringing. “I've come from a similar background as this population and I can identify. I think that it doesn’t matter the subject that you teach, it’s the influence you make in the kids goes beyond the actual subject.”
Join us in congratulating Gema, 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year at John F. Kennedy High School!
