Child Nutrition Services

The EISD Child Nutrition Department is cheerfully and willingly responsible for ensuring that all Edgewood ISD students are offered appetizing and nourishing meal options while adhering to federal guidelines. These meals are prepared daily by certified staff in a sanitary environment and our menus are prepared by an enthusiastic team that is lead by a Registered Dietitian.

Food Allergies

A food allergy is defined as a abnormal immune response to food. For some people, the response is mild while for others it can be a severe life threatening reaction requiring an epi pen. Although people can be allergic to any type of food, the 8 most common food allergens include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat/gluten. Students who exhibit signs of a food allergy are encouraged to see a specialist for confirmation and treatment plan. Students with severe food allergies needing a menu modification are suggested to either have a   Dietary Request Form filled out by a medical authority or are encouraged to bring lunch from home.

Foods containing potential food allergens from the 8 most common allergens are listed in the Reference Guide. This document is to be used as a resource only and is not a guarantee of ingredients in all foods. Products stocks by Edgewood ISD are subject to change due to supplier changes or substitutions out of our control. Manufacturers may also change formulation without our knowledge. Parents are welcome to look at any ingredient label on food products onsite with the school cafeteria manager.

Edgewood ISD tries to avoid products known to contain peanuts as an ingredient. We do not contact food manufacturers to determine if food items are manufactured in a plant where peanuts, tree nuts, or any other allergens may be present in trace amounts. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that foods purchased have not been in contact with allergens during manufacturing.

Special Dietary Needs

Special Dietary Needs

Under USDA regulations, Edgewood ISD Child Nutrition Services is required to provide menu modifications and/or substitutions to students with life threatening allergies, or for students with disabilities that restrict their diet.

Menu changes may be provided for:

1) Students with a documented 504 Plan specifying a special dietary need.

2) Students that that a disease or food allergy that is life threatening

If a student meets either of these 2 definitions, a recognized medical authority (i.e. physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioners) must fill out the  Parent/Guardian must also sign form to give consent to plan of care.  Dietary Request Form

The Dietary Request Form must include:

  • Explanation of student's disability or medical diagnosis
  • The food or foods to be omitted from the child's diet; and
  • The food or choices of foods to be substituted

Please send signed and completed form to your school nurse. Then the school nurse will forward to cafeteria manager and Child Nutrition Dietitian. The Dietitian will review the form and follow up with parent/guardian for further plan of care.

*Dietary Request Forms are active for the life of a student's academic time and can only be discontinued by an authorized medical authority. We still encourage parents/guardians to obtain a new form each year to ensure medical needs are met and up to date.*
