Helpful Hints for Test Day

Schedule a lunch break on test day

If you schedule more than one subject in the same day, you will not receive a lunch break automatically. To schedule a lunch break, schedule each subject separately so that you have time in between tests.

Change or cancel appointments at least 24 hours before

You must change or cancel your test at least 24 hours before your appointment time or else you will lose your payment. If you cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours notice or do not show up, you will not receive a refund.

Arrive early

Make sure you know where the testing center is and arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled GED® test appointment

You will need to check in when you get there

If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled appointment time, you may not be admitted and may lose your test fee

Know the test center rules

You will not be allowed to eat, drink, smoke, or use your cell phone during your test

Cell phones are strictly forbidden in the testing room. If you are found with a cell phone during testing, you will be escorted out and your test will not be scored. You will also need to reschedule and pay for another test.

When you schedule more than one subject in the same day, you will automatically be given a ten-minute break in between tests. Unscheduled breaks are not allowed and your test may not be scored if you leave the room during an unscheduled break.

During scheduled breaks and lunches, you may access your personal items

If you need to leave the room, have questions about the test, or are experiencing problems with your computer, raise your hand and notify the test administrator

If your friends or family come with you, they will not be allowed in the testing room. Testing centers may not have waiting areas and they may not be permitted to wait.

Be prepared

Get a good night's sleep and eat before you come so you can focus

Dress comfortably and plan to leave most of your personal items at home

You can change what your test looks like on your computer screen to make it easier to read. Download these guides to learn more about changing the on-screen color of your test, the text size of your test, and how to highlight text on your test.

What to Bring

What do I need to bring to the testing center?

On the day of my test, you must present an Identification that lists a Texas address or you must present a military ID. If you do not present proper identification, you will not be eligible to sit for your test and will be turned away.

What can I bring into the testing room?

You will be given three erasable note boards and marker to take into the testing room and can use a handheld TI-30XS Multiview Scientific calculator on the Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies test subjects. If you want to use this handheld calculator, you must bring it on test day. Test centers will not have calculators for you to use.

You may be required to store your calculator in your locker or other secure storage. Your testing center will advise you when you can retrieve your calculator for approved test sections.

Cell phones are strictly forbidden in the testing room. If you are found with a cell phone during testing, you will be escorted out and your test will not be scored. You will also need to reschedule and pay for another test.

Other personal items (such as handbags, backpacks, wallets, keys, etc.) are not allowed in the testing room. Storage is available, but limited.

Erasable Noteboards

You will have an erasable noteboard for certain subjects. Prepare for your GED® test by learning about erasable noteboards.

About

Erasable note boards are available during your GED® test instead of scratch paper to use as an organizational and planning tool for each of the four GED® test subjects.

The noteboards are designed to be used with an erasable marker and can be wiped clean after each use

Why can't I use paper?

Erasable noteboards are a green alternative to the use of scratch paper

Erasable noteboards avoid the risk of improper removal of scratch paper from the testing center, which can compromise test security

Policies

You will be allowed to have a package of three (3) erasable note boards to use in preparing your answers during the test.

Erasable noteboards may not be used before the test starts

A test administrator can provide you with a replacement, if needed

You will be monitored at all times during your test

Your test may not be scored if you are engaging in misconduct or other irregular activities. This includes removing an erasable noteboard from the testing center.
