Goal

The Dyslexia Education Program takes PRIDE in helping students who are at risk for dyslexia. PRIDE stands for Promoting Reading and Intervention through Dyslexia Education. This title serves as a reminder to students, parents, and the community of Edgewood Independent School District (EISD) that individuals who are at risk for dyslexia need special programs to learn to read, write, and spell.

The screening and identification process for the Dyslexia Education Program reflects the District's commitment to educate all students while recognizing that traditional educational programs are not always effective for all students. This program will serve as a force to focus on our students at risk for dyslexia and their special needs.

Definition of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
