The Memorial High School JROTC is a stronger battalion heading into the new school year following a week of challenges, obstacles and adventures.

Six cadets from the MHS JROTC participated in a JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) at John Newcomb Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels earlier this month. The annual camp helps prepare cadets for their roles within the battalion.

“Our cadets learned leadership, team building and Esprit de Corps skills during the five-day event,” says Captain Shavayey Cato, Senior Army Instructor at Memorial High School.

The challenge took Cpl Aubrey Bazan, Cpl Joseph Gamboa, CSM Alexis Lozano, SSG Sara Gonzalez, 2LT Nick Contreras and 2LT Guadalupe Hernandez out of the classroom, and into a boot camp style environment.  It is designed to push the students both physically and mentally through agility trials, obstacle courses, and high ropes courses while also teaching them to trust themselves and their fellow cadets.

“Despite the high temperatures, the cadets never complained,” says Capt. Cato. “Instead, they learned how to work through the sweat and the determination it took to achieve their personal winning color.”
