This is the image for the news article titled Memorial High School Powerlifters Advance to StateIvan and Jonah have been in a state meet mindset. On Friday, March 25, 2022, they will head to Abilene to compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship.

This Minutemen powerhouse will be up against every 5A and 6A school in Texas.

“Are you nervous?” asked our cameraman.

“Yes, we’re really nervous,” said Jonah Lopez, junior at MHS. “But we’re excited too.”

At the Regional Competition in early March, Jonah placed first by meeting his regional total. An accomplishment he says is truly a blessing. "Being able to compete at a state meet has been my goal since the start of my freshman year. I've been working harder each day to achieve my goal and all that hard work has finally payed off. Truly blessed."

Teaming up with Jonah at State Competition will be Ivan Garcia, senior at MHS, who placed first at Regionals, beating out his super heavy weight division opponents. He became the first regional champion at Memorial High School in 15 years.

"Ever since the start of powerlifting in ninth grade, I’ve been wanting to get on that list of top powerlifters in the state. I feel accomplished that I've achieved that goal. It's awesome!"

MHS powerlifting coach, Coach Davila, says he always knew his athletes had something special in them and is thrilled to see their success this season.

“Getting these boys to compete and qualify for state was one of the goals I had from the beginning. I'm excited to showcase what Memorial Powerlifting is about and compete with the best.”

Great job athletes! Way to make us #EdgewoodProud.

The Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet will be Friday, March 25, 2022 and Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, TX.
