Elementary and middle school students from
around the city competed in the annual FIRST LEGO League competition held at
the Brentwood Middle School gym. The event hosted over 100 students from
Edgewood ISD and surrounding school districts.
Teams were tasked to design a solution to a
community problem that fits in this year’s theme - Plan for the Future. One
EISD team designed a “Clean the Earth” phone app that finds volunteers willing
to pick up trash. Another team is working to clean up area businesses in an
effort to beautify the community.
Along with the innovative design, the event also
features LEGO robot matches. Teams build robots out of LEGO and program them
via computer to complete specific missions on a player board. Team members have two and a half minutes to use their
robot to improve the LEGO city. Each team is judged on many factors
including completion and accuracy.
According to their website, the FIRST LEGO
League is the most accessible, guided, global robotics competition, helping
students and teachers to build a better future together. Students emerge
more confident, excited, and equipped with the skills they need in a changing
workforce.
