One of the biggest issues we face in third grade is with math. Some of the new strategies being taught to kids can seem overwhelming or even downright confusing. Many times parents will express frustration and ask, "Why can't I teach them the way I learned it?"  The answer is simple, "While we learned formulas and "tricks" growing up, the new push in education is to develop a true sense of mathematical reasoning and number sense. Those "tricks" we were taught don't set students up for success in developing a true understanding of numbers and what they can do for them."

The best advice I can offer parents who are interested in learning "exactly" what their child will be responsible for learning this year is to visit the lead4ward website. This site explains the standards using "snapshots" which will give a brief statement detailing the objective for each standard. It is also available as an app-which is really helpful.
If you would like more information on how to utilize this site, please feel free to contact me or the parent liaison here on campus. Together we will succeed!
