Parent and Family Engagement Policies 2011-2012

 

The district will:

 

§  Involve parents in jointly developing the Parent and Family Engagement Plan

o   District PFAC committee

§  Provide the coordination, technical assistance, and other support necessary to assist campuses in planning and implementing effective parental involvement activities to improve student academic achievement and school performance

o   Parent Educator staff and professional development

o   Parent Educator meetings with Title I Director

o   Series of sessions provided to parents and community members. Topics are chosen to meet Title I Requirements: campus based training sessions; campuses work collaboratively to host training sessions for the community

§  Build the campus’ and parents’ capacity for strong parental involvement:

§  Coordinate and integrate parental involvement strategies with parental involvement strategies under other programs.

o   District-wide Family Literacy Fair that includes Head Start

o   Transitioning from Head Start to kinder meetings

o   Special populations meetings

§  Conduct, with the involvement of parents, an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parental involvement policy in improving the academic quality of the campuses served with Title I funds:

o   Develop an evaluation tool to identify barriers to greater participation by parents in parental involvement activities, with particular attention to parents who are economically disadvantaged, are disabled, have limited English proficiency, have limited literacy, or are of any racial or ethnic minority background

o   Use the data of the evaluation to design strategies for more effective parental involvement

o   Revise the district’s parental involvement policies as needed in response to data

§  Involve parents in the activities of the campuses served under Title I

o   Volunteering

o   Planning sessions

o   Interest surveys and inventories

o   Campus-based incentive programs

§  Coordinate the Parent and Family Engagement Plan with programs under Title II of the ESEA to provide professional development to teachers, principals and to parents and other staff

o   Parent notification of teacher qualifications

o   Presentations at faculty meetings

o   Parent professional development through Region XX and other partnering agencies

 

The campuses will:

 

§  Develop, jointly with parents of children receiving Title I services, a written campus parental involvement policy that describes how the campus will carry out the parental involvement requirements, including the development of a school—parent compact

o   Form a parent-led committee through parent volunteer orientation to develop campus Parent and Family Engagement Policy and School Compact

o   Amend existing parental involvement policies and School Compact as needed

§  Periodically update parental involvement policies to meet the changing needs of parents and the campuses

o   Annually evaluate the campus and family needs to update parental involvement policies as needed

§  Notify parents of campus’ written Parent and Family Engagement Policy in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, and to the extent practical, provide notice and the policy in a language parents can understand

o   Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be made available through Parent Educator campus websites

o   Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be made available by the campus upon request

o   Parents will be notified about Parent and Family Engagement Policy through newsletters and calendars

§  Make campus’ written Parent and Family Engagement Policy available to the local community

o   Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be made available through Parent Educator campus websites

§  Involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs, including:

o   The planning, review, and improvement of the campus Parent and Family Engagement Policy

§  Bi-annually by end of September for new parents and by end of April preparation for the new school year

o   The joint development of any campus-wide program plan

§  Through campus and district committees such as CPOC, LPAC, PFAC, DEIC, Long Range Facilities Committee, SHAC, etc

§  Develop a process for involving an adequate representation of parents of children participating in title I programs in the joint planning and design of the campus’ programs

o   Look at possibilities of using other processes to invite parents and families such as social media avenues; campus websites; targeting business/community partnerships; connections with agencies such as: businesses, institutes of higher learning, Communities in Schools, etc.; act as liaisons to local agencies and businesses; and creating a database of resources for campus programs
