Benjamin Escatel, 5th grade student in Mrs. Briseño’s class, has been representing Winston and Edgewood ISD as a student ambassador on the Mayor’s Fitness Council during this school year. Together with his campus mentor, 3rd grade teacher María Moreno, they have been attending trainings and exploring ways to make our school community healthier.
One way of doing this was a series of zumba classes, held in the school gym on Saturday mornings. Mrs. Guerra’s mom volunteered to lead the classes and helped kids and adults exercise in a fun way!
Benjamin’s current project is to organize and guide a team – the Winston Walkers – to participate in the District’s Cinco K fun run that will be on Sunday, May 4th. This will be a 6-week program for walkers and joggers. Anyone interested can join at any time – just show up and go at your own pace! We will meet at Kennedy Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we will walk from 7-7:30pm. Begin date will be Tuesday, March 25th – see you out there!
Benjamin also plans to deliver healthy messages and fun food facts to the entire school community through morning announcements.
Do you know someone who would like to serve as a student ambassador? Ambassadors advocate for healthy eating and active living in their schools and communities. They map out a plan for a project to improve nutrition and physical activity at their respective school campuses or neighborhoods and then implement the project as well as participate in interactive trainings and events throughout the year. For more information, visit www.FitCitySA.com. Deadline to apply is May 2, 2014.
