Bad snap and late penalty snaps Minutemen win streak

Bad snap and late penalty snaps Minutemen win streak

If you could ask the Memorial Minutemen to get a “do over” of the last four minutes of there game against the McCollum Cowboys on Thursday night, they would take it.  After making a then game saving tackle on a McCollum extra point that let Memorial keep a slim 35-34 lead, the Minutemen still had control of the game.  On there next offensive possession, Memorial went three and out and had to punt.  That's when the game took a turn against them.

A bad snap on the punt flew over the punter's head and out of the end zone to give the Cowboys a 36-35 lead with under four minutes left in the game.  After a free kick, and with McCollum facing a third and long, the Minutemen were penalized with a personal foul giving the Cowboys a fresh set of downs and the victory.  Memorial did get the ball back, but with no time outs and a long way to drive for a game winning field goal, the clock ran out on the Minutemen.  The look on the player’s faces told the story.  A victory slipped away by mental mistakes.  Memorial Head Coach Alex Guerra hopes that overcoming these types of mistakes are his players can work on for the remainder of the season.

Despite the loss, Memorial still gave an all around effort.  Ivan DeAnda recovered a fumble on the games first play and then scored on a five-yard pass from Alfred Ramos to put the Minutemen in the lead.  Manases Cano scored twice (once on a run and a pass) and Raul Rangel scored on another run.

Memorial now faces the brunt of their schedule.  The good news is that three of the games will be at Mata Stadium.  The Minutemen will host Floresville this Friday with a 7pm kickoff.  This Friday's game has been designated a “Blackout Game.”  Specially made black shirts have been made for this game and will be sold at Memorial High School during lunch periods.
