Garcia's late touchdown seals victory for Rockets

By Manuel A. Carranza

Isiaha Garcia's thirty yard touchdown reception midway thru the fourth quarter assured the Kennedy Rockets of a 27-7 victory over the Crystal City Javalinas at Frank Mata Memorial Stadium on Friday night.  Matthew Avalos started the scoring on a twelve yard touchdown run on the Rockets first possesion of the night.

The JFK defense then added to the scoring as linebacker Fabian Flores returned a Javalina interception for a touchdown on Crystal City's second offensive series.  Tomas Garcia also returned an interception for a touchdown near the end of the first half.

Despite numerous opportunities, Crystal City could not seem to manage any type of offense.  The Javalinas started several times on Kennedy's side of the field, but either a penalty or a defensive stand by the Rockets stopped the Javalina rally.

Despite the win, and having an open week before their next game  Kennedy head football coach Richard Cerda explained they still have many things to work on.  “On offense, We have to win the six inch war.”  “We also have four good quarterbacks playing for us and we have to pick a starter by the start of district play.”  “We also have to work on the little things” when he spoke about his defense.

The Rockets next play Jefferson at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex on Friday, September 13th at 7pm.  Kennedy returns to Mata Stadium to host Pearsall on Friday, September 20th at 7pm.
