Edgewood ISD plans parent meetings for 6th Grade Academy
Edgewood ISD is introducing the 6th Grade Academy starting with the 2014-2015 school year.
Next school year, all 6th grade students will be served in the former Hoelscher Elementary School building, 1602 W. Thompson Place,adjacent to Brentwood Middle School. Edgewood ISD will use a transitional design that will help bridge students from the structure of elementary school to the independence of middle school.
The District will hold information meetings for parents of current 5th grade students, who will be the first group to be served in the new 6th Grade Academy. Meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Cisneros,Gardendale, Loma Park, Perales, and Winston elementary schools; and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Henry B.Gonzalez, Lyndon B. Johnson, Las Palmas, Roosevelt, and Stafford elementary schools.
The 6th Grade Academy will offer technology in all content areas, student-teacher teams, a transitional schedule, and project-based learning. In addition, students will have choices in electives,including art, band, orchestra/mariachi, choir, and P.E.
There will be after-school clubs, including Police Athletic League, chess, robotics, drill team, Anime (animation), and University Interscholastic League activities.
Edgewood ISD will provide daily transportation for eligible students. Students will return to their attendance zone assigned middle school for 7th and 8th grades.
