The Memorial Minutemen defense was looking to make a statement as they opened District 29-4A play on Friday against the Southside Cardinals at Mata Stadium. That statement was made. On the game's third play, the Minutemen's Ivan De Anda recovered a fumble and returned it to the Southside one yard line. After a penalty, Memorial quarterback Alfred Ramos ran in for a touchdown from six yards out to put Memorial on the board first. Two more fumble recoveries by Ben Arriaga and Carlos Rangel, an interception by Richard Cazares, and a defense that made several quarterback sacks help give the Minutemen a decisive 36-15 victory Southside.
Ramos also threw for three scores. Cazares caught one from 32 yards out. De Anda scored on a 17 yard pass. David Manzano scored the last touchdown pass for the Minutemen on a 29 yarder. Raul Rangel had Memorial's lone touchdown on the ground when he ran one in from 27 yards. Gabriel Robles also kicked a 25 yard field goal.
Despite all of the Minutemen's success, they did give up some easy points. On two occasions, Memorial gave up a safety and a touchdown on bad snaps when they tried to punt.
Memorial has little time to relax. They next play McCollum on Thursday, October 3rd at Harlandale Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 7pm. Memorial's next home game will be on Friday, October 11th when they host Floresville at Mata Stadium. Kickoff is also at 7pm. It will also be a “Blackout Game” that night. Specially made shirts are being made for the game and are available for purchase thru the Memorial Athletic Booster Club.
