GGMS 7th Grade Social Studies Students Revisit History

The Gus Garcia Middle School Social Studies teachers, along with Anne Goudvis, author and consultant, the administration, and SS district specialist participated in their last round of Stephanie Harvey’s Social Studies Literacy Coaching. While completing their unit on the Civil Rights Movement, and reviewing the Children’s Crusade of 1968 and the Edgewood Student Walkout of 1963, students received a surprise visit. Linda Flores, one of the 400 students that participated in the 1968 walkout at Edgewood High School shared her experiences and insights with Ms. Ybarra’s 4th period 7th grade Social Studies class. Ms. Flores said she has learned to focus on the positive insights she gained during this time. “I’ve learned to take risks and as result, I became a teacher after working as an airplane mechanic and then became a licensed realtor.” The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed this experience and were able to make connections to past and current events. Thanks, Mrs. Linda Flores, for sharing your historic encounter.
