"What all good teachers have in common . . . is that they set high standards for their children and do not settle for anything less." Marva Collins "New things are made familiar, and familiar things are made new." Samuel Johnson The San Antonio and Bexar County HEAD START Program is committed to: "Assisting eligible children and families of San Antonio and Bexar county with high quality educational, nutritional, medical, dental, mental health, disability, and other services through strong partnerships that promote success through school readiness and family strengthening." What is HEAD START? HEAD START was born and survived with the kind of spirit and determination that lives in the heart of all young children. HEAD START is about the future. Perhaps more than any other social program of its time, it is a symbol of hope for a better life for low-income children and their families. The United States cannot afford to waste its young children and ignore their families. HEAD START provides us with an important sense of hope that we have the potential for helping our most vulnerable children and encouraging their families. The program is designed to maximize the strengths and unique experiences of each child and family. Parents are seen as the principle influence in their children's development and are direct participants and decsion makers in the program. HEAD START staff and district personnel work together to support the spirit and philosophy of the HEAD START program, which is based on mutual respect, self worth, and the provision of supportive and nurturing relationships. HEAD START is a comprehensive child development program that encompasses all aspects of a child's development and learning. Upon entry to the program, each child receives required screenings to confirm that he or she is in good health and is developing well. This is the initial determination of a child's overall health status, developmental strengths, needs, and areas of identified concern, such as a possible serious delay or disability that may lead to referral. After screening, the requirements for child observation and ongoing assessment continue throughout the child's enrollment in HEAD START. Using appropriate observations and assessment procedures, staff and parents follow each child's progress and experiences from his/her arrival in the program to the time he/she leaves. Through this process, they come to know each child's strengths, interests, needs, and learning styles in order to individualize the curriculum, to build on each child's prior knowledge and experiences, and to provide meaningful curriculum experiences that support learning and development. In these ways, staff, parents, and programs support each child in making progress toward determined developmental instructional and learning goals. Attendance: * Daily school attendance is important for future school success. Once enrolled, children are expected to attend. * Attendance is mandatory by the State of Texas once enrolled (Compulsory Attendance Laws). * Please do not have child miss instruction unless they are ill and must stay home due to physician's recommendation. * If a child is absent, a note must be sent to school from a physician or parent. Parent Advocates will contact families if absences persist. * Tardies and early release prior to 3:00 p.m. can add up to absences. * Too many absences from school will cause the school district to take action with a family. * Setting a good example with daily attendance will carry-over into the upper grades. Personal Items: * Label all extra clothes that are sent to school, sweaters, jackets, change of clothes with your child's name. * Children do not need to bring toys, money, jewelry or anything you don't want misplaced or lost. * For naptime, children may bring a small towel or blanket. A mat will be provided. Items will be sent home on Friday for laundry and return on Monday. Please do not send stuffed animals or dolls for naptime. Fund Raising: * Fund raising within any HEAD START center is not permitted. Parents are important members of our team and we need your help:, At your HEAD START Centers, parents may assist as classroom volunteers (backgroung check is required), as children's role models, as a motivator and as a care giver. Parents may also become decision makers, become role models for other parents and organizers for special events. Parents always set an example by attending workshops and courses. At the same time, we all learn more about our children and the acquisition of new readiness skills. We can assist our children by becoming involved, becoming a volunteer and ensuring that we develop a trusting and working relationship with your child's teacher. Your HEAD START Staff is highly qualified: All HEAD START staff are considered highly qualified by the State of Texas and the Texas Education Agency. All teachers have obtained their teaching certificates from the State of Texas and also possess either a Bachelor of Arts / Science (BA / BS) or Master of Arts / Science (MA / MS) degree from an accredited university. All teacher assistants are also considered highly qualified by the State of Texas and the Texas Education Agency. Our teacher assistants are currently working on their Child Development Associates credentials (CDA).
