Jose Hinojosa-Special Education Director

Jose Hinojosa is originally from Victoria, Texas. Upon graduating from high school he moved to Kerrville to attend Schreiner University , where he earned his degree in Kinesiology. In 1998 he moved to San Antonio and began working with students with autism in an occupational and physical therapy rehabilitative setting. Here he found his passion for working with students with disabilities and in 2000 began his career in Northside ISD as secondary LIFE skills teacher. In 2005, he became a secondary Special Education Department Coordinator and a couple years later became a Secondary Special Education Campus Coordinator working at a Title 1 campus. While there he worked to improve graduation rates, reduce drop out rates and increase rigor in academics. Jose then became a Secondary Special Education Central Office Area Coordinator where he gained experience working with cases involving mediation, compliance and resolution.

 

Jose joined the Edgewood family in the 2014-2015 school year. He plans to use his knowledge and experience of Special Education to serve the students, families, staff and community of Edgewood. His overall goal for the department is to achieve compliance through instructional excellence. Jose recognizes change can be difficult but believes it is essential for program improvement.

Delilah Trevino-Compliance Coordinator

Delilah Trevino has spent her entire school career in Edgewood ISD.  She joined the Edgewood Special Education Department in  January of 2000 as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP). Her first campus assignments were Emma Frey and Burleson elementary.  Coincidentally, the Special Education district offices are currently at Emma Frey and Burleson, so she still spends time at both campuses.  After a couple of years in the district she became the Lead LSSP, and then moved on to her current position of Special Education Coordinator. Delilah earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Mary’s University and her Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Prior to working in a school district, Delilah worked in forensic settings such as the Texas Department of Corrections, the juvenile justice system of Travis County, and the Center for Health Care settings in San Antonio.  Besides her LSSP license, she is licensed as a Psychological Associate and a Licensed Professional Counselor.  Delilah is proud to serve the children and families of Edgewood.

Stephanie Borrowman-Instructional Coordinator

This is Dr. Stephanie Borrowman’s third year at EISD. She is veteran of the USAF where she served as an Air Traffic Controller (RAPCON).  She received an Honorable discharge and soon after earned an AA in General Studies from the University of Maryland, Asian Division followed closely by a BS in Professional Aeronautics with minors in Aviation Safety and Aviation Business Administration from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. After a brief stint at Sacramento International Airport, she realized her real passion was in education. She completed the teacher credential program at Chapman University, went on to complete a M. Ed. in Special Education from Western Governor’s University, and this year earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Lamar University.  She has worked in California, Germany and England with the Department of Defense Overseas Schools, and Northside ISD in San Antonio in both general and special education classrooms.  She has also worked as a Special Education Instructional Support Teacher. In this position, she supported teachers in 74 schools in the subjects of ELAR and Social Studies. Dr. Borrowman is very excited to be a part of the EISD family, and looks forward to continuing to support teachers, students, and their families.

Jessica Moncada-Special Education Secretary

Jessica Moncada graduated from Lanier High School.  She attended Texas Careers and received certification as an Administrative Assistant Secretary and an Associate’s Degree in Information Technology Networking from Career Points.  Jessica has worked in the Edgewood district for 15 years.  She began her career as a data clerk at Burleson Elementary School and became the data clerk for the Special Education Department in 2005. In 2016, Jessica became the Special Education Secretary.  Jessica recognizes the importance of customer service and data entry. She believes that doing this job accurately and with diligence is imperative as it trickles to district staff, families and students.

Ruth Martinez-Records Clerk

Ruth M. Martinez is a product of Edgewood ISD, having graduating from J. F. Kennedy HS.  She has attended both St. Phillips and San Antonio Colleges and St Mary’s University where she aspired to become a teacher. She has been employed with the district since 1991, as a substitute teacher and in various clerical positions. She joined the Special Education Department in 2002 as a Records Clerk, a position she enjoys immensely. Releasing Special Education records to other school districts, parents, and the students themselves is of the utmost importance to Ms. Martinez. The need to send out these records ensures that the child will be provided the services they require.  In a way, she is a teacher at heart, as she releases the information to these entities to help provide continued services for the student. She is assured that the child will succeed and become a productive and resourceful person.

Martha Olivarez graduated from Harlandale High School. She then attended San Antonio College and obtained her Associate Degree in Business Technology. Martha has worked in the Edgewood District for 24 years.  She began her career as an Administrative Assistant for the Niños Program at Cardenas Center. She also worked as an Administrative Assistant for the Elementary and Secondary Curriculum Department and the Personnel Department. Martha has been the Special Education Medicaid Billing Specialist for the past ten years where she aims to provide a high quality service for the district.

Jacqueline Gonzalez grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated from Camelback High School.  She has been a resident of San Antonio for over a decade and attended Palo Alto College with a major in business.  Jacqueline has experience as a teacher’s aide in a special education self-contained classroom and as an administrative assistant.  She joined Edgewood’s special education team in 2016 as the department’s bookkeeper.  Jacqueline believes that accuracy and timeliness in her job will ensure all department members have the resources and materials needed to successfully provide an appropriate education to our students.

Juanita Rosas-Parent, School, Community Specialist & Lead Interpreter

Juanita is a native of Laredo, Texas. She had the good fortune of commuting between the cities of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas Mexico and Laredo, Texas as a child.  She attended elementary school in Nuevo Laredo until her family immigrated to the United States. Juanita believes that this experience has aided her in understanding the many special needs of students and the multicultural issues that need to be addressed by the school system.

Juanita has been in the Edgewood Independent School District for 24 years.   She has been an elementary school teacher, an Instructional Specialist, and an Assistant Principal. She joined the special education department in 2014 as the Special Education Parent Educator.   Ms. Rosas is a true believer that “knowledge is power.”  It is this belief that drives her passion for educating the Edgewood community.   She agrees that parents are most important in a child’s education but she recognizes that not all parents have the tools to ensure their children’s academic achievement. Her goal is to reach all parents of special education students and to offer them learning opportunities that will directly affect student success.

Sylvia Villa-Child Find Facilitator

Sylvia Villa is a graduate of Memorial High School. During her senior year, she began working at USAA where she worked for 21 years. During her career at USAA, she joined the Mentor Program and mentored students at Business Careers High School. During this time, she realized her passion in working with students and helping them reach their goals. She returned to school to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at UTSA. After graduation, she substituted at Northside ISD and then worked at Bexar County Academy as a Pre-K Teacher for a year and Special Education Teacher for elementary and middle school students for 3 years. She also worked at Las Palmas Elementary for 2 ½ years as a Life Skills Teacher. She believes all students can succeed with the right program and/or services provided to them based on their individual needs.

Sarah Minner-Special Education Technology Specialist

Sarah Minner has worked in EISD since 2005. After graduating from the University of Texas at San Antonio, she became a Special Education Resource and Inclusion teacher at Perales Elementary. She then moved on to teach LIFE skills at Las Palmas Elementary. While working as a Special Education teacher in the district, she earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Autism and Emotional Disturbances from Our Lady of the Lake University.  Sarah served as an Autism Itinerant Teacher in the district for 4 years and this is her third year as the Special Education Technology Specialist. Her goal is to create and maintain the Special Education website, create a streamlined ARD process and use her love of working with students with disabilities and technology together. She believes that for some students with disabilities technology can make things possible.

Sarah Elizondo-LIFE Skills Program Specialist

 Sarah Elizondo joined the EISD Special Education team in the fall of 2014 as a Program Specialist. Sarah attended the University of Texas at San Antonio where she majored in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Special Education. While pursuing her Bachelor of Arts, she worked as a Life Skills paraprofessional at the secondary level. It was during this time she found found her passion in working with students with disabilities.  Upon graduation she became a High School Life Skills teacher and was instrumental in starting LIFE skills and Autism units in NISD. Sarah believes that, all students can achieve success through their abilities, despite their disabilities.Her goal is to support teachers so that all students can reach academic goals while learning functional skills that prepare them for life outside of school.

Joe Montalvo-Special Education Program Specialist

Joe A Montalvo has been a part of the Edgewood family since childhood.  He was a graduate from Edgewood High School.  He has worked as a Special Education paraprofessional at Emma Frey Elementary and Wrenn Jr. High. While working as a paraprofessional in the district, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Autism and Emotional Disturbances from Our Lady of the Lake University.   He is certified as an Elementary and Middle School General and Special Education Teacher. After earning his Teacher Certification, he then taught at Gus Garcia Middle School as a Special Education Resource and Inclusion teacher for two years. He then became a Lead Special Education Teacher for three years at John F Kennedy High School. Currently, Joe is a Special Education Transition and Graduation Program Specialist for all the schools in our district.  He works with all educators in the district to assist in teaching and supporting our students in special education. He strongly believes that all Edgewood students have the potential and ability to achieve their lifelong goals.

Jose Paz-Behavior Management Classroom Program Specialist

Jose Carlos Paz is the EISD Special Education Behavior Specialist. He joined the EISD Special Education Team in the Fall of 2015. Mr. Paz attended the University of Texas at Brownsville where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor is Sociology. After earning his Teacher Certification in Special Education he taught in a variety of setting including Resource, Inclusion, Co-Teaching and Behavior Modification Classrooms. His experience led him to a position as the Educational and Instructional Coordinator at the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program. While at J.J.A.E.P he earned his Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. He later joined the Administrative Team for a District Alternative Education Program as their Educational Liaison before relocating to San Antonio. Mr. Paz believes in a school culture and educational program conducive to students’ learning and development. Families are under tremendous challenges today, and he seeks to foster positive behavior, students and faculty teamwork, and cooperation in the school environment.

Vanessa Vallejo-Autism Itinerant Teacher

Vanessa Vallejo began working as the Autism Itinerant Teacher in August 2015. She brings with her eight years of experience supporting students with Autism. She began her career in Special Education in 2006 as a paraprofessional. While a paraprofessional, Vanessa found her niche and realized her passion for educating students with special needs. She became a Secondary Specialized Instruction (LIFE) Teacher in 2012 and in the 2014-2015 school year taught in the Autism Behavioral Unit. This experience allowed her to enhance her skills for individualizing academics and behavior strategies for students with Autism. Her goal is to use those skills to support success for the students of EISD. She is excited to be a part of the EISD Special Education team. She believes team work and collaboration are main components for student success.

Sherri Mell-Adapted Physical Education Coach

Sherri Mell came to Edgewood ISD with 10 years of teaching experience in Regular Education as an Elementary PE teacher. She began her Edgewood career at HK Williams Elementary School as the Elementary PE Teacher, teaching there for 6 1/2 years. She became the Adapted Physical Education Teacher for Edgewood in the fall of 1999.  Coach Mell is a National Certified Adapted Physical Educator and is certified to train 16 sports for Special Olympics of Texas. She has been recognized throughout her career as the SOTX Teacher of The Year, Tom Landry Coach of the Year, Trainer of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. She has coached Special Olympics for 24 years now taking her teams to State Level Competition each year with some going to Nationals. She often shares her animals with the students of Edgewood and is known for bringing Llama Claus each year around Christmas time.  She is a Multiple World and National Champion Cowgirl with a 2X Hall of Fame Claim to fame, being inducted into the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame (2004) as well as the National Appaloosa Hall of Fame (2006). Sherri founded and runs her Equestrian Special Olympics Team out of a Therapeutic Riding Center, Riding Opportunities Promoting Exceptional Riders (ROPER) on the Southeast side of San Antonio. ROPER has been nationally recognized in books, magazines and even has it's own segment on the Texas Country Reporter! Her athletes have been recognized through SOTX at both the Area 20 and State level as Athletes of the Year. Coach Mell loves the students and families in Edgewood and is on her 3rd generation of students in her teaching career.

Bethany Zamora-Homebound Teacher

Bethany Zamora is a homebound teacher who has taught in elementary, junior high and high school.  She also served students and their families as an elementary school counselor four years.  Her bachelor’s degree is in elementary education, and special education, and her master’s degree is in counseling and guidance.  She is certified through the State Board of Educator Certification in the fields of elementary education, grades 1-8 and special education, Pre-kinder through grade 12. Bethany believes that trials in life can make us stronger.  Learning does not end when hardships come; it is a springboard to greater heights, if we believe. Her goal is to provide students with a quality education, so they can be successful when they return to campus.

Tammy Carroll-Auditorily Impaired Itinerant Teacher

Tammy Carroll is a 12+ year veteran to teaching. She has taught in Florida, Tennessee, and Texas. She graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education with Deaf Studies in 2001. She is currently pursuing her graduate degree in Special Education from Concordia University. She has taught students in a classroom setting and in the inclusion model before taking the Auditorally Impaired Itinerant Teacher here at Edgewood ISD. She works directly with her students focusing on the skills that they need and she works with parents by teaching an American Sign Language Class for 10 weeks at a time.

Catherine Edwards-Visually Impaired Itinerant Teacher

Cathy Edwards is the Teacher of the Visually Impaired for EISD.  She is a native Louisianian who married a native Utahn and brought him to Texas 25 years ago.  Cathy has two adventurous children, Zachary and Page.  Zachary is a graduate of BYU Hawaii working at Goldman Sachs.  Page is a missionary for the LDS church with plans to earn her LMSW and JD upon returning. Her husband, Jeff, is an LMSW who splits his time between being an elementary school social worker and counselor at SAC.  Cathy graduated from BYU, earned a masters in education from UTSA and is currently completing certifications for VI and O&M from TTU. After 23 years of teaching middle school reading, Cathy is excited to take on the challenge of working for EISD as a teacher for the visually impaired.
