Dear Edgewood I.S.D. Community:

It is hard to believe we are in the final nine weeks of this school year and in the middle of the busiest testing month.  Let me begin by saying thank you for trusting us with your children.  As a parent, I understand the trust and expectations you have for our school district and we at Edgewood I.S.D. approach everything we do knowing what is expected of our school district and us.  Every time we make a decision on a program or activities, the first thing we ask is “is that what is best for our students?”  We analyze data to see where our greatest needs are and then focus on improving that area.  The new STAAR tests and accountability system have certainly changed the playing field in education and we are striving to provide our teachers and students with the tools needed to meet the higher standards set by the state.

We need your cooperation too.  It is essential that your children receive plenty of rest during the months of April and May.  The length of the STAAR exams is long and our students need to sustain their stamina for each test.  It is a lot to ask of our students but we believe in them.  This is where your help is needed.  Please make sure your children get plenty of rest and try to schedule doctor or dentist appointments on days that do not fall during the testing week.  The next big testing week is April 21st through the 25th and we test again in May.  Your school will send you the exact days your child will test.  It is critical that your child is present during the test administration days.

We are excited about closing this school year.  Our teachers have worked hard learning the new math standards and have selected new science and math resources for use next year.  We are also selecting new resources for technology and will utilize more technology in the classroom.  Edgewood I.S.D. has started the implementation of a three-year plan for technology where all classrooms will be able to “blend” technology into all areas of instruction.  It is just one way we are targeting 21st century skills into our world-class curriculum.

We are so proud of our students and teachers.  We saw so many successes this year throughout our district.  Several sport teams made it to the playoffs and our UIL academic teams have done an excellent job representing their school and district.  The Memorial High School One Act Play has continued their quest toward moving to the next levels in our district.  Also, our fine arts students continue to represent Edgewood with excellent performances.  We have awesome students and teachers.  Edgewood I.S.D. has so much to offer your children and we strive to help build students to be college and career ready with the increase of support for PSAT, SAT and college readiness skills.  Current 8th grade parents will be invited to HB5 meetings in order to inform you and your student on endorsements and to develop a personal graduation plan.

Edgewood has taken a lead in sharing our endorsement paths and “majors” students will select with other districts in our Region.  We are excited about the direction we are headed and see improvement in our future.  We strive to provide the World-Class Education for all.

 Lilia Nanez 2014  Respectfully,

 Chief Academic Officer
