Edgewood District Veterans (EDV) Organization:

Purpose and Mission

The Edgewood District Veterans (EDV) was founded in November 2006 by George Gonzalez Jr., a 1965 graduate of Edgewood High School and twenty-year U.S. Air Force veteran. The purpose and passion was to unite former high school friends into an organization to serve their community because these individuals grew up in the neighborhood and are proud graduates of the schools in the Edgewood School District. According to founder and former President George Gonzalez, “our neighborhoods were having similar economic and social problems we had experienced many years before, and District Veterand Logo asked ourselves what we could do to help?” The EDV founders recruited neighborhood friends and alumni to join and organize themselves into a viable organization. They initially donated time and monies to help with the homeless, children, and needy families. These efforts were productive and as the membership increased,so did EDV’s commitment to better serve the Edgewood School District and Community.

After eight years, the Edgewood District Veterans, comprised of  U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force (Vietnam) veterans has grown in numbers and commitments.Today, there are 80 members, of which, 60 are active members. The group dedicates themselves to schedule and work annual fundraiser activities such as Golf Tournaments, Dances, Raffles, and sale of Spaghetti Dinners. The monies from these activities go toward the purchase of Thanksgiving food baskets, winter coats for children, school supplies, college Scholarships, and a general fund to use for unexpected costs and donations.

Some accomplishments attributed to EDV include erecting a monument to honor all school district veterans who served during the Vietnam Era, 1959-1975; the renaming of Cenizo Park Elementary School to Roy Cisneros Elementary to honor the late USMC Sergeant awarded the Navy Cross and the Texas Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously. EDV also collaborated with Prairie View A&M University and the Edgewood Independent School District to assist with volunteers and trainers for their Take A Stand and Mentoring Programs.
