Ramiro
Nava received his Bachelor of Arts
degree and his certification for
teaching from the University of Texas in
San Antonio. He became a member of the
Edgewood Board of Trustees in 2000 and
in 2002 was elected to serve as
president where he continues to serve
today. Nava was reelected in May 2004
and will serve through May 2008. He has
been a lifelong resident of Edgewood ISD.
He is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High
School and a member of Our Lady of Good
Counsel Catholic Church. Some of his
commitments in serving Edgewood ISD
include improving community outreach,
increasing parental involvement,
improving existing facilities and
building new schools. He plans to
continue efforts to improve equitable
funding for public education, and to
continue support for a living wage. Nava
is married and has four children
attending Edgewood schools. |

Mr. George Garnica
Vice President

George Garnica became a school board
member in 2002. He will serve on the
board until the year 2010. He is
dedicated to taking on tasks that will
benefit the progress and success of the
school district. He believes that the
children must always be at the forefront
of all we do. He is a proud graduate of
John F. Kennedy High School.

Faz Martinez

Marisol
F. Martinez received her Bachelor’s
Degree and teaching certification from
St. Mary’s University. She is a lifelong
resident of Edgewood School District.
Martinez was appointed to the board in
December of 2003 and was elected to the
board in 2004. Martinez serves as a CPOC
member for the Edgewood Academy,
Edgewood Lions Club, and a parishioner
of San Martin de Porres Catholic Church.
Some of her goals as a board member are
to increase student achievement, improve
teacher retention and improve existing
facilities and build new schools. She
supports the living wage and continuing
the fight for equitable funding for all
public educational facilities in Texas.
Increasing parental involvement and
improving community outreach are also
among her goals. Martinez has been
elected to serve until the year 2008. |

Mr. Jesse R. Alcala

Jesse
Alcala is a graduate of St. Philips
College. He is Chairperson of the UT
Health Science Center Advisory Board and
a member of the Loma Park Elementary
PTA. He belongs to the Knights of
Columbus and is a parishioner of St.
Jude’s Catholic Church. Alcala was
elected to serve as a member of the
Edgewood ISD Board of Trustees in 2000
and has been re-elected to serve until
2008. Alcala is a strong supporter of
increasing student achievement,
improving community outreach and
business and housing opportunities in
Edgewood. He supports the living wage
and will continue efforts in the fight
for equitable funding for all Texas
children. Alcala is a single parent with
a child. |

Ms. Estefana C. Martinez

Estefana C.
Martinez received her Bachelor’s Degree
from Our Lady of the Lake University and
her Master’s Degree from UTSA and
obtained a supervision certificate from
OLLU. Martinez is a retired teacher of
Edgewood ISD. She served as elementary
teacher, Bilingual Specialist, Migrant
program parent coordinator, Title I
Reading Supervisor and acting principal
while at Edgewood. She is a member of
the Edgewood Lions Club, Catholic War
Veterans Auxiliary, Edgewood Children
First Committee and a Eucharistic
Minister at San Martin de Porres. She is
active in the Meals on Wheels program,
member of PAC, a CCD teacher, and
volunteers at the Veteran’s Hospital.
Martinez has served on the Edgewood ISD
school board since 1998. She is widowed
and has three children. |

Ms. Mary Lou Mendoza

Mary Lou
Mendoza is a lifelong resident of
Edgewood ISD. She has been involved in
many community and district projects.
Prior to becoming an Edgewood ISD Board
Member, she was employed by the Edgewood
ISD Special Education Program. She
assisted lead teachers in implementing
Individual Achievement Plans and
Behavior Modification Plans for special
needs students which included physical
needs, communications skills, and
providing daily and weekly reports on
progress. Mendoza has served as a
community activist for the Edgewood
community and the City of San Antonio.
She served on the San Antonio Fluoride
Campaign, SVRP Westside Voter
Registration Drive, Local Democratic
Primaries Campaign, Edgewood Trustee
Campaigns, Edgewood Pony League as
Director, Team Mom, Assistant Coach, and
Coach. Her determination in striving for
excellence in educating the children of
this community has led her to pursue her
involvement in serving on the Edgewood
ISD School Board. She supports the
living wage and improving community
outreach. Mendoza is a parishioner at
Holy Family Catholic Church. She is a
graduate of Memorial High School. She is
a single parent with four children. |

Mr. Johnny R. Perez

Johnny
Perez has been a member of the
Edgewood ISD Board of Trustees since
2000. Perez served as vice-president
of the Board of Trustees in
2002.
He is presently a trustee and will
serve until 2008. Perez is a
U.S. Postal Service employee and is
a U.S. Navy Veteran. He is a
parishioner of St. John Berchman
Catholic Church where he served as a
baseball coach for the youth league.
Perez is a member of the National
Letter Carrier, Local Union #421.
He supports improving teacher
retention, business and housing
opportunities and the boys and girls
athletic programs. Perez has been an
Edgewood resident for 51 years. He
is married and has three children.
