My name is Melba C. Alejos and I am privileged to be the director for the Memorial Minuteman Band.
I am a graduate of Edgewood High School class of 1977 and I received both my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and my Master of Music Education from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas.
Band Class meets daily and there are after school requirements for participation. Practice outside of class is a reasonable expectation for our classes as we are have a performance based curriculum.
Rehearsals are considered homework as are section practices. Performances outside of competition are also considered as a grade. Any student may make up a rehearsal in a reasonable time period.
Every effort is made to allow students time to participate in Band and other activities in an equitable manner.
The Memorial High School Band has enjoyed success in UIL and non UIL events in the past five years. This year, the band received its third consecutive 1st Division rating at UIL marching contest.
In addition, the band has received five years of UIL awards for concert band. Several of our students have earned UIL awards for solo and small ensemble performance with many advancing to the State UIL meet in Austin. Two of our students were selected to the prestigious All Region Band.
Our band also performs twice a year for our feeder middle school and our elementary schools with Holiday and Spring Concerts.
This year our band has has been selected once again as the FEATURED BAND for the Battle of Flowers Band Festival for Fiesta Week. Eight schools entered the selection process with only three bands chosen and Memorial was one of the top three.
The Memorial Band has learned well and taken to heart the mantra of our group
"ATTITIUDE IS EVERYTHING!!!
