By the end of Fifth Grade, students should be able to:

• Pass both the reading and math portions of STAAR (in order to be promoted to 6^th grade)
• Pass the science portion of STAAR with a minimum of 75%
• Understand the place value of numbers from the thousandths place through the billions period
• Multiply and divide 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers
• Add and subtract fractions
• Utilize problem solving in math as well as their daily lives
• Read and comprehend a 5^th grade level passage at 140 words per minute (minimum)
• Recognize and understand science in the world around them
• Understand and utilize the scientific method
• Understand key events and people in United States history
• Use proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and organization in all written work, not just Language Arts.
