Students will identify musical elements such as loud/soft, fast/slow and high/low.
1st Grade:
- Students continue to build a repetroire of folk songs from around the world.

Students routinely play percussion instruments in the music room.

Students begin to identify the musical element of long/short and continue with high/low.

Students understand that silence is a musical element.
2nd Grade:

Students learn rhythmic symbols such as the quarter note, quarter rest and eighth notes.

Students read and play rhythmic patterns on simple instruments.
-
Students study the brass family of instruments.
-
Students identify high/low sounds as so/mi.

Students sing songs with so, mi and la pitches. |
3rd Grade:

Students begin to notate rhythms from dictation.

Students aquire the half note, half rest, whole note and whole rest.

Students begin to read pitches on a five line music staff (do, re, mi, so & la).

Students begin to play a simple wind instrument called recorder.

Students are encouraged to participate in after school piano keyboard lessons and the school chorus.
4th Grade:

Students continue with the recorder.

Students aquire sixteenth notes and a syncopated rhythm.

Students sing and play the following pitches: do, re, mi, so, la, ti & high do

5th Grade:

Students are preparing for middle school by continuing their recorder studies.

Students participate in a musical based on the ballet of the "Nutcracker". |
