Tina Morales was elected in 2008. She retired in 1994 and is currently employed as a Home Support Liaison. Morales’ goals are to improve the educational system for students and staff. She supports an increase in parental and community involvement. She previously served on the board from 1990 - 1998.

Ms. Velma Peña, Vice President

Velma Peña has been married 31 years to Tony Peña. Velma and Tony have 4 children and 6 grandchildren. She is a member of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC); she also represents the Edgewood area as a member of the SAWS BexarMet Integration Advisory Committee. Velma has continued to be very dedicated to her community. She is an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Texas Congress of PTA and has received the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers Extended Service Award. She believes that all our children should be given the same opportunities for a better education to succeed in life.

Mary Lou Mendoza was elected in 2002. She has served as a community activist for the Edgewood community and the City of San Antonio. She is currently working as a community researcher for a non-profit entity. She supports the living wage and improving community outreach. Mendoza was reelected in 2010.

Sonia Elizondo joined the Edgewood ISD School Board in November 2010. She enjoys working with children and is one of the co founders of the Texas Toros. Elizondo is looking forward to a progressive year on the Board. She is a graduate of Memorial HS.

Mr. John Morales, Trustee

John A. Morales was appointed to the EISD School Board in May 2013. He has been employed with San Antonio Water System (SAWS) for 16 years. Mr. Morales is an active member within the Edgewood community, including being a parent volunteer volleyball coach with PALS and a volunteer coach with the Westside YMCA. He and his wife are active members of the Kelly Field Lions Club. Mr. Morales believes that being of service to others is a gift, but is especially proud of serving children, who are our future. He wants to ensure that children are given the best education possible to be productive members of society. Mr. Morales and his wife have three children within the district. His term expires November 2014.

Johnny Perez has been a member of the school board since 2000. Perez is retired from U.S. Postal Service and is a U.S. Navy Veteran. He supports teacher retention, business/housing opportunities and the boys and girls athletic programs.

Dr. Eddie Muzquiz Rodriguez, Trustee

Dr.  Eddie Muzquiz Rodriguez is a lifetime resident of Edgewood ISD. He graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1984.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Rodriguez worked in Edgewood ISD for 25 years as  a substitute teacher, science teacher at Wrenn MS and Math & Science Academy at Kennedy HS; curriculum specialist; and administrator of the Toltech T-STEM Academy of Memorial HS.

               Rodriguez has been instrumental in writing the grant for the eight-classroom Science Lab Building at Kennedy HS and the six-classroom Science Lab Building at Memorial HS. He has worked at San Antonio College and the University of the Incarnate Word, teaching undergraduate, graduate, and certification classes to first-year teachers. He has been a presenter at state and national conferences strategies for teaching and addressing the needs of students; and with Mexico City as a presenter at the “Secretaria de Educacion Publica (SEP)” (Mexico’s Department of Education).

He was a Clark Scholar Recipient from Texas A&M University in College Station and a 2008 Fulbright Scholar Award Recipient from the U.S. State Department. He traveled to Mexico City to learn about their educational system. Rodriguez served as a consultant assisting schools in Rhode Island and Texas at improving their academic performances in science and mathematics.

Rodriguez is currently the Principal of the Harlandale ISD STEM Early College High School—Alamo Colleges at Palo Alto, the first STEM Early College High School in a large metropolitan area in Texas and first in San Antonio. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University—San Antonio, teaching a Secondary Science Methods Course.
