Iam delighted to introduce myself as the Principal of Gus Garcia MiddleSchool. I come to you from RooseveltElementary where I have been Principal for the past nine years. Along with our administrative team, we havebeen planning throughout the summer and preparing for a great year at Gus. We have hired many new staff and planned formany new opportunities for our students. Some of these new opportunities include providing orchestra and choir aselectives. We are also in the process ofstarting up clubs such as National Junior Honor Society, Chess Club, StudentCouncil and Cheer Club to name a few. Ofcourse, we will continue to provide clubs such as Robotics and UIL, etc.
Thefollowing orientations have been planned to provide our students theopportunity to walk their schedule and meet the teachers:
Wednesday,August 21st 7th/8thGrade Orientation 5:30 – 7:00
Thursday,August 22nd 6thGrade Orientation 5:30– 7:00
Monday,August 26th SchoolBegins 8:15– 3:45
Therewill be a brief introduction at the beginning of each orientation. Gear Up will be presenting for 8thgrade so that parents may be advised of great opportunities for their childrenin this program. Gear Up will follow our8th grade cohort all the way through 12th grade. We will have order forms available forparents to purchase PE uniforms for all students. All orders are prepaid. It is required that all students in PEclasses be dressed out for class. OurParent Educator, Ms. Cerda, will be available both evenings. We encourage you to use this time to completeyour background check to be a parent volunteer. These forms must be completed every year.
A reminder of the Edgewood Districtuniform policy includes:
Girls: White polo-styled shirts orblouses with short/long sleeves with collar – Dark navy blue or khaki walkingshorts, skirt or slacks
Boys: White polo-styled shirts with collar – Dark navy blue or khaki walkingshorts or slacks
7th grade may wear orangepolo and 8th grade may wear grey polo.
Pants may have pockets in front andback (maximum of four total pockets). Carpenter, INCO Cargo, Capri, windbreakerpants, sweat pants/ shorts or overall dress/pants are not allowed. No jeans or denim cloth material will beallowed. Shorts and skirts shall not beshorter than 4 inches from the knee. Thiswill be judged as where the tips of the fingers meet when arms are beside thebody and stand straight. Studentswishing to wear t-shirts under their uniform will only be allowed to wear whitet-shirts. Students are expected to be inuniform on the first day of school.
TheDistrict is once again providing school supplies and backpacks to allstudents. Backpacks/supplies will beissued to students in class on the first day of school. There is no need for parents to purchaseschool supplies for students.
Schoolhours are 8:15 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. Breakfast is served in the classroom daily from 7:55 a.m. to 8:10a.m. Instruction will begin at 8:15a.m.
Registrationfor new students is taking place daily. In-coming 6th grade students do not need to register. Families new to the Gus Garcia community,please have them call 444.8075 to schedule a time/date for registration.
TheDistrict will be changing security on all campuses and departments requiringall doors to be locked at all times. Allvisitors will ring a buzzer and will be buzzed into the building. We willcontinue to require a valid identification card in order to receive a visitor’spass.
