“Battle of the Bluebonnets”

Congratulations to our “Battle of the Bluebonnets” winners for 2012 from Roy Cisneros. Cisneros’s team, the Bluebonnet Blizzard, defeated the Stafford Cheese Cats in the final. The Cheese Cats won the runoff elimination for second place with Gardendale’s Readers Live! to advance to the final.

The “Battle of the Bluebonnets” is a competition that was piloted in 2006 by the late Caroline Kibodeaux, our much missed librarian from Perales ES. Teams of four students in the 3rd – 5th grade represent each elementary school and answer questions that cover books selected from the nominees for the current Texas Bluebonnet Award List. The competition promotes our students to read highly regarded, challenging books and to grow as readers and competitors. Nineteen teams competed this year and a crowd of about 300 students and family members met at 8:00 in the H.B. Gonzalez cafeteria.

Thanks to Ms. Rosemary Barrera and all the staff at H.B. Gonzalez for being such great hosts and to all those who made this year’s tournament possible; the Edgewood elementary Librarians, our reader Rich Dupree from Follett Books, all the principals and EISD employees who came to cheer on their teams, all the volunteers that helped serve breakfast and act as score keepers, and all the students and families who gave up their Saturday morning to join in our celebration of reading.

And a Special thanks to Dr. Miller, Superintendent Dr. Cervantes, Board President Joseph Guerra and Vice President Teresa Moreno and our Board of Trustees. Their support of our Library program, the Battle of the Bluebonnets and our students has been constant over the years and is the foundation of our success.
