Our class uses chapter books from the Reading Leveled Book Room to enhance student thinking skills and challenge a student's Reading fluency and comprehension skills. The students really enjoy reading the chapter books because it allows them to have a sense of "reading superiority." The students begin to think of themselves as mature readers, thus challenging themselves everyday. We use chapter books in both reading small groups and during independent reading. What are some of the ways you use chapter books in your daily instruction.

  • Story Maps

Story Maps are an important part of the Reading process as they help organize a student's thinking into distinct segments which clarify what the student is trying to describe. Story Maps also provide a unique way of displaying student responses because of the many ways in which students think. The map itself gives students a different way of answering questions about a text, and may make it more interesting for a student to attempt to answer it. Our class uses many kinds of story maps to enhance student thinking. Some of the students in our class are starting to create their own maps. This shows that  their thinking skill are starting to reach the higher level of Blooms, as now they are not only creating their own answers to questions, but are now creating their own maps to derive their own conclusions. Which story map do you like to work with? and why? Our class' favorite story map is the main idea with supporting details.

History is important. Can you name the following person who is significant in American history? And what did he do, or accomplish?
