Mrs. Harris is the specialized unit teacher at Winston Elementary. She has been at Winston for two years.  Prior to working at Winston Elementary, Mrs. Harris was a head start teacher at Burleson Early Childhood Center.  She has been with the Edgewood district for six years.  

Mrs. Harris' prior experience includes substitute teaching at Lackland ISD, where she completed her apprenticeship in 2008.  Mrs. Harris earned her Bachelor of the Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2008.  She earned her Master of Arts in Education at the University of Texas San Antonio with an emphasis in early childhood inclusion studies.  She is certified to teach general education for grades EC-4 as well as special education grades EC-12. Mrs. Harris is committed to teaching exceptional students. She has experience with applying the best practices and interventions for behavior support.  She has also been trained to work with students with individualized behavioral needs.
 Mrs. Harris' philoposphy is that a teacher is not a person who leads student to learn, but facilitates the learning process. She believes that teacher should guide students to think independently. Students of all abilities should initiate and take ownership of their learning. She practices the guided release model where she models, guides, and then allows the students to demonstrate skills on their own when they are ready.  She meets students where they are and makes plans help them meet their individual goals.  

Mrs. Harris has a strong belief that anyone can learn when provided a strong support system. She believes in building partnerships between teachers, administrators, parents, and students to help lead students to academic and functional goals.  Mrs.Harris welcomes suggestions and likes to collaborate with families to help her students experience success.
