Course Description

The main goal of Algebra 1 is to develop fluency in working with linear equations. Students will extend their experiences with tables, graphs, and equations and solve linear equations and inequalities and systems of linear equations and inequalities. Students will extend their knowledge of the number system to include irrational numbers. Students will generate equivalent expressions and use formulas. Students will simplify polynomials and begin to study quadratic relationships. Students will use technology and models to investigate and explore mathematical ideas and relationships and develop multiple strategies for analyzing complex situations. Students will analyze situations verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically. Students will apply mathematical skills and make meaningful connections to life's experiences.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

 Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):
I will be your child’s Algebra 1 teacher for this school year.  In order to give your child and all the students in my classroom the excellent educational climate they deserve, I have developed policies/procedures for the classroom that will be in effect at all times.

In my classroom, students must comply with the following rules:

 1.     Be prepared to participate in your education.

 2.     Follow teacher directions and School Policies.

 3.     Respect others and yourself

The following are the Positive Reinforcements:

 1.     Praises

 2.     Notes/Call Home

 3.     Rewards (Individual/Class)

If a rule is broken, the following consequences will apply:

 1.     Verbal Warning/Clarification of Rules

 2.     Teacher-Student Conference or Stage 1 Referral

 3.     Call Parent(s)/Guardian(s)

 4.     Referral to Administrator

NOTE:   If a student is severely disruptive, student will be referred to an administrator.

Expectations are high.  21st century jobs and universities are requiring students to be skilled in all aspects of their high school education. The work will be challenging and plentiful.  This means that I will do my best to help your child be successful.  My tutoring schedule is MTWR from 7:30-8:30 am and anytime my door is open after school.

Classwork/Homework is absolutely essential to succeed in this class.  Students cannot be successful in Mathematics without practice.  Failure to engage in class and failure to complete assignments are failing behaviors.  My students are required to take notes and keep them organized in a notebook.  Please ask to see notes, assignments, and assessments from time to time.

Attendance:  When a student is absent, he/she is required to report that excused/unexcused absence(s) to the school’s Attendance Office.  STUDENTS are responsible for making up any missed work.

                 Grading Policy:   50%   -   Summative   -   Tests/Projects/Presentations
