Geometry and Geometry Pre-AP Syllabus

Geometry is a mathematics course designed for students who have completed Algebra 1 and includes the study of points, lines, planes, angles, shapes, and solids. Real-world problem solving situations will also be covered. This course is for Toltech T-STEM Academy sophomores and is rigorous in its study of geometric theory and situations; studying outside of class time is an absolute necessity.

COURSE TIMELINE:

1^st 9-Weeks – Foundations of Geometry; Geometry on the Coordinate Plane;

 Properties of Lines and Transversals

2^nd 9-Weeks – Triangles; Right Triangles; Quadrilaterals

3^rd 9-Weeks – Two-Dimensional Figures and their Measurements; Three-Dimensional Figures;

                        TAKS Review

4^th 9-Weeks – Measurements of Three-Dimensional Figures; Year in Review; Architectural Design

GRADING POLICIES

1.  Each Nine weeks:

v  Formative grades: Participation – 16%, Class work – 17%, Homework – 17%; Total - 50%

v  Summative grades (binder checks, tests, projects): 50%

2.  Each Semester:

ª       Two nine weeks:    75%

ª       Semester Exam:     25%

3.  Final Grade: Average of two semester grades.

4.  Late Work:

v  Warm Ups are a daily grade due at the beginning of each class period and cannot be made up. If you miss a warm up due to an absence, an alternative assignment will be given.

v  Class work is due before the end of the period on the day it is assigned, no exceptions. You may attend tutoring to complete class work not finished in class. If you miss class work due to an absence, you must attend tutoring to make up the assignment. 

v  Homework is the due the class period after it is assigned and is graded on completion. If it is not completed, it will be accepted one (Pre-AP) to three (non Pre-AP) class periods after it is assigned. If homework is not turned in within this time frame, it’s a zero. The highest grade a late homework assignment can receive is an 80.

Mathematics can be very challenging; therefore, instructional time is very important. Students who are absent miss vital pieces of information, fall behind completing coursework, and risk credit denial.  If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to collect missing assignment(s) and notes.  These can be obtained from the website, a classmate, or by making an appointment with the teacher.  For each day a student has an excused absence, one additional class day will be given to complete missing assignment(s).  If a student is absent on the day of a test, the test can be made-up by making an appointment with the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to make appointments and turn in all missing assignments and tests completed and in a timely manner. 

Notebooks/Binders are required for this class.  The notebook should be a 1.5 to 3 inch 3-ring binder and should consist of items in the following order: Course Syllabus, Classroom Policies, List of Assignments, and then dividers. We will discuss notebook organization in detail in class. Notebooks will be graded two or three times each nine-weeks.

SCHOLASTIC INTEGRITY:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to: cheating on tests, copying of homework, and the discussion of tests with other classes before all classes have completed the test.  The consequence of scholastic dishonesty will come in the form of a zero (0) for that assignment, test, or project.
