I'm Ms. Laura James and I am thrilled to be in my second year of teaching here at Memorial High School. I was born in Corsicana, Texas, raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, lived in many different places here in the United States, Panama`, and Germany, and earned a B.S. in Psychology at the University of Central Texas while living the military chapter of my life. When that chapter came to a close, I came back to Texas as soon as I could to begin a new chapter right here in San Antonio! I began working on a Master's degree in Education with an emphasis on Special Education at the University of Texas at San Antonio while I worked in the College of Education at UTSA. Walking across the stage in December of 2012 to graduate with my Master's degree was an enourmous accomplishment that I am extremely proud of!
I am a certified Special Education teacher, with additional certifications in CPR, First Aid, and CPI. I am currently working towards a certification in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), as I believe it will compliment my work in Special Education. I strongly believe learning is a lifelong pursuit requiring constant engagement that is essential to remaining current and relevant. I challenge myself; as well as, my students to actively participate in life learning and to strive to see the possibilities in themselves by focusing and on what they are able to do, instead of the ways they are limited.
Providing a safe, positive classroom environment that encourages each student to explore and learn is my goal. In addition, academic and social interaction between classmates, peers, and the community is emphasized to assist in building important skills for success. Students who enjoy learning are more likely to continue learning and it is my responsibility to inspire and engage them in this process~!
