This is a very exciting year for the ESL (English as a Second Language) programs at both high schools. I will be teaching two ESL classes at Memorial in the morning and two ESL classes at Kennedy in the afternoon. I will be working closely with the English departments as well as Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers to help students acquire vocabulary, academic comprehension, and useful strategies to be successful on the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) and the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.) In addition all ESL student's participate in the TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) which includes holistic scoring by the English teachers in the following components: speaking English, listening and understanding English, and writing English. The TELPAS reading on-line test measures their English comprehension at their grade level. I will utilize as many methods as possible when assisting the students and teachers including; Spanish/English translators, Spanish/English dictionaries and glossaries, graphic organizers, small group, district initiatives:SIOP/Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocol, Differentiated Instruction and use of ELPS/English Language Proficiency Standards, one on one instruction and use of technology and the internet.
